About FinExplained

FinExplained is a personal-finance site built on one idea: a money answer is only worth as much as the math behind it. So we show the math. Every calculator here exposes its formula, a worked example, its assumptions, and the source behind each figure, so you can check the work instead of trusting a black box.

Our mission

Most money calculators online are black boxes: you enter numbers, you get a result, and you have no idea whether the math is right or what it assumed. We do the opposite. The goal is to explain personal finance in plain language, show the full calculation, and skip the hype, so a decision you make here is one you actually understand.

Why you can trust the math

Trust here is earned by how the tools are built, not by a title. Every calculator runs on one shared engine, so a formula is defined once and reused everywhere with nothing to drift out of sync. The money math is decimal-precise, checked against known-correct results to the cent by an automated test suite, and each change ships only after it passes that suite plus a set of build guards. Nothing goes out red.

Where our numbers come from

The figures behind the math come from primary sources: the IRS for tax brackets and limits, the SSA for the Social Security wage base, the BLS for inflation data, and other official bodies. We cite them on the page and gather them in one place, and year-stamped figures are reviewed on an annual checklist so nothing silently goes stale.

How we make money

Honesty about money includes our own. Today FinExplained earns nothing: there are no ads, no affiliate links, and no paid placements. As the site grows we plan to add advertising and, in some cases, affiliate links to products we would genuinely recommend. When we do, it will be disclosed plainly, advertising will stay light and never break a calculator, and affiliate links will carry a clear, per-link disclosure. Our recommendations will never be for sale.

See our affiliate disclosure and privacy policy for details.
